Parathyroid Disorders

Parathyroid disorders lead to abnormal levels of calcium in the blood that can cause brittle bones, kidney stones, fatigue, weakness, and other problems.There are typically four parathyroid glands located near the thyroid gland. Each parathyroid gland is normally about the size of a grain of rice (about 3-5 millimeters in diameter and 30 - 60 milligrams in weight).Parathyroid glands release parathyroid hormone (PTH) which controls the calcium levels in the blood stream. Other areas of the body, especially the bones, kidneys and small intestine, respond to PTH by increasing calcium levels in the blood. Calcium is very important for our bodies, especially for muscle and nerve function.
Hyperparathyroidism exists when the parathyroid glands produce too much parathyroid hormone (PTH). This may be due to multiple reasons, and the reason helps determine the appropriate type of treatment. Sometimes treatment is as simple as replacing vitamin D when the parathyroid gland is responding appropriately to a problem elsewhere in the body. In other cases, there is an issue with the gland itself and surgery is required.
Excess parathyroid hormone can lead to negative effects on the body such as osteoporosis which can lead to fractures, kidney stones, decreased kidney function, heart disease, pancreatitis, increased acid secretion in the stomach and ulcers. Many patients experience symptoms of fatigue, depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, difficulty with their memory, insomnia, generalized muscle aches and pains, frequent urination (especially at night), and constipation. Because these symptoms may be related to many other disorders, it is never known until after treatment whether or not these will improve.
The opposite problem, hypoparathyroidism, occurs when the parathyroid glands do not produce enough PTH. This leads to a low blood calcium level and can adversely affect muscle, nerve and other functions.

Pituitary

The pituitary gland is an organ that is the size of a pea, located at the base of the brain. Also known as the “master gland,” the pituitary gland helps to regulate other glands in the body. Pituitary gland disorders can disrupt the proper function of hormone-producing organs, such as the thyroid, adrenal glands, and gonads. If the body produces too much or too little of a hormone, symptoms may include:-

• Anxiety or depression
• Diabetes
• Hair loss
• High blood pressure
• Irregular menstrual periods
• Unexpected breast milk production
• Low energy or low sex drive
• Stunted growth or unusual growth spurts
• Unexplained weight gain
• Vision changes

Fatigue
Diaphoresis (sweating)
Weight loss or gain
Irregular menstruation
Sexual dysfunction.

Tumors can also develop in the pituitary gland. These tumors often press on the eye nerve, resulting in vision loss.
The pituitary gland produces many hormones that regulate bodily functions:
• Adrenocorticotropic hormone: ACTH causes the adrenal glands to produce cortisol. This hormone helps your body regulate blood pressure, respond to infections, and control sugar, fat and protein.
• Follicle-stimulating hormone: FSH affects reproduction, helping to release eggs in women and to make sperm in men.
• Growth hormone: GH controls growth in childhood and adolescence. In adults, it maintains body structure and energy production (metabolism).
• Luteinizing hormone: LH, along with FSH, helps with reproduction.
• Prolactin: This hormone is involved in breast milk production (lactation).
• Thyroid-stimulating hormone: TSH controls the amount of hormones produced by the thyroid gland. These hormones affect metabolism and growth.
• Antidiuretic hormone: ADH helps your kidneys manage the amount of water in your body.
• Oxytocin: This hormone helps control reproductive system functions, including birth and lactation.

Adrenal Disorder

There are many conditions that can lead to problems with the adrenal gland function. The adrenal glands are small and shaped liked triangles and are located just above each kidney. They are sometimes called suprarenal glands. Their job is to make hormones that you need to keep your metabolism, blood pressure, immune system and stress response in balance.

Adrenal disorders are the result of your glands making too much or not enough of certain hormones. Hormones produced by the adrenals include hydrocortisone (also called cortisol), adrenaline and aldosterone.
There are different conditions related to your adrenal glands. Some of the most common include:
• Addison’s disease also called adrenal insufficiency. In this disorder, you don’t produce enough cortisol and/or aldosterone.
• Cushing’s syndrome. In this disorder, your levels of cortisol are too high. This term can be applied when large doses of steroids are given to treat certain medical conditions.
• Adrenal gland suppression. This is a type of adrenal insufficiency that is related to outside sources of cortisol or related synthetic hormones such as prednisone or dexamethasone.
• Hyperaldosteronism. If you have this condition, your body produces too much aldosterone which can lead to blood pressure elevation and potassium loss.
• Adrenocortical carcinoma. This rare condition refers to cancer forming in the adrenal gland’s outer layer.
• Pheochromocytoma. If you have this condition, your glands make too much epinephrine and norepinephrine which can raise blood pressure or make your heart race.

Hyper-thyroidism

An overactive thyroid where it produces too much thyroid hormone is called hyperthyroidism. This condition speeds up your metabolism, causing rapid or irregular heartbeat that may lead to serious health complications such as heart problems if left untreated.

Hypo-thyroidism

Hypothyroidism is when an underactive thyroid does not produce enough thyroid hormone. Unlike hyperthyroidism, not enough thyroid hormone would mean many functions of your body would start to slow down. This may lead to fatigue, confusion, and hypothermia, and in severe cases, hypothyroidism may even lead to heart failure.

Thyroid Disorders

The thyroid is an important gland that regulates your metabolism, body temperature, energy levels, and your heart rate. If thyroid disorders are left untreated, serious complications may arise. Goiter

Thyroid cancer

Thyroid cancer is where cancerous cells grow in the tissues of the thyroid. While early-stage thyroid cancer can be easily treated, the same cannot be said for the late stages when the cancerous cells spread to the nearby tissues.
